Making A Translucent Piece.

 The Log Section

This is a section of Hoop Pine,

Araucaria cunninghamii, to be made into a translucent bowl form. Hoop Pine
grows in the mild, costal, temperate rainforests of Northern NSW to Northern Queensland.

Section mounted on the lathe ready for tuning.

Turned and ready for drying.

This piece is still quite "wet", it is the moisture within the wood that gives it the translucence at this stage.

Finished oiled form.

In the finished piece it is now the oil that gives the piece the translucence. The oil penetrates through the wood filling the air spaces within the wood allowing light to be refracted through the piece.
